Publisher Martha Pontoni named to police review board

Gay People's Chronicle publisher Martha J. Pontoni has been named to the Police Civilian Review Board by Cleveland mayor Michael R. White.

The Police Review Board handles complaints against the Cleveland police department from citizens who believe they have been wrongly treated by the police. Pontoni will be the first openly lesbian-identified woman to serve the City of Cleveland.

"I'm really excited to serve the lesbian and gay community in a more visible role with the City of Cleveland. I think that this appointment shows that Mayor White is committed to recognizing and involving lesbians and gays," commented Pontoni about her appointment.

Pontoni's appointment followed a visit to the mayor during one of his "Mayor's Nights In" in the City Hall rotunda, where she thanked him for his support of the Chronicle and the lesbian-gay community in general. "After the Chronicle had its benefit, the mayor received phone calls regarding the Community Relations Board's support. I welcomed the opportunity to thank the mayor in person."

Cheryl Davis, assistant to the mayor, said, "I am pleased to have Martha as a member of the Cleveland Police Review Board. She brings a unique blend of professionalism and sensitivity to the board as it seeks to administer equal justice and understanding of the diverse communities within our city." Pontoni hopes that her presence on the board will help lesbians and gays feel safer in reporting incidences to the board.

When asked if this appointment would present a conflict of interest between the city and the Chronicle, Pontoni replied, "I see my appointment as a strengthening of ties between the administration and the community. If a conflict of interest ever arose I would excuse myself from being invovled in that decision. The Chronicle has an experienced and competent editorial board to handle such situations."

The four year appointment is a nonpaying position. Training for the position includes time at the Cleveland Police Academy and patrolling in a police car.

Pontoni's swearing in will be October 23 in the Mayor's Red Room in City Hall at 2:15 p.m. The public is invited to attend.▼
